This delightful car was built circa 1999, by a Mr K Pointon, and although it is based on a 1930’s Mk4 tourer, it has a red wing style that makes reference to the side-valve Riley’s of the early 1920’s. Most of the 2 seater Riley’s of the 1920’s were finished with polished Aluminium body, a red painted chassis and upswept wings, which were generally fitted with the 10.8 engine, however these were quite pedestrian in their performance. Riley knew they needed keep ahead of the competition. The Riley 9 1100cc OHV engine was their answer, and it was a huge leap forward. This new car appeared in prototype form in 1926 in the Monaco Saloon, by 1927 it was powering several other body styles. The success of the 9 was the demise of the old side valve car of the early 20’s. This new 1100cc 9hp engine put the Coventry car company well and truly on the map. The 9hp engine was used in many Riley models from Brooklands racing car to lynx and 4 seater tourers.
To this day the Riley marque has ben the backbone of many car clubs up and down the country and indeed internationally. Spares are ready available which makes the Riley marque very appealing to many people, and are indeed very sought after. This attractive car has a full tonneau, and hood with large diamond shaped rear window for exceptional rear visibility, which makes it quite a unique example. The car really could be a family focused vintage car. There is a storage trunk to the rear (which can be removed), which provides exceptional and useable additional storage. The deep running boards also have inbuilt storage for tools or something equally as useful! The engine remains in standard tune with a single 1” SU carburettor, the fitting a twin carbs would greatly improve performance if someone desires to do so. The interior is also red complimenting the red paint work, with a polished aluminium dashboard and period instruments. All in all a very nice touring car for individuals or families to enjoy. |
