Information Was built by a dedicated and talented engineer during the early 1990s, who at that time owned a fairly successful Aston Martin restoration company in Yorkshire. I understand he undertook the work mostly by himself using components from a Kestrel. New Replica TT Sprite side rails were used utilizing the original Kestrel chassis cross-members and mechanical running gear. The replica MHP Le Mans body has been constructed over a tubular frame. Like the Original team cars a 12/6 was used. The engine was rebuilt for fast roadwork, with over size Omega pistons, high lift cams and double valve springs. The exhaust note is any enthusiasts dream….

Unlike the two original Le Mans cars, this car uses an Armstrong pre-selector gearbox, rebuilt with close-ratio gears supplied and set up by Bill Morris. This makes it a very easy car to drive both on the road and competitively. The axle is standard Kestrel but fitted with 4.5-1 differential. Brakes and steering are original Kestrel but completely overhauled. AXH32 has been well detailed during its construction, such as with cord-bound road springs, an original scuttle mounted oil tank, hand-operated fuel pump (not connected) and reserve fuel supply switchover. Maroon paintwork married with OX Blood leather and black tonneau. The chrome-work is superb. The whole car is finished to a fastidious standard and drives superbly.

It has a VSCC Buff Form and is classed as a Riley MPH Le Mans Special.

The V5C identifies the car as a 1934 Riley Kestrel.

1934 Riley Competition lineup

The mid 1930s saw huge changes in the Riley racing department. The Brooklands had been a proven winner but times were changing in motorsport, the Brooklands road car had ben superseded by the IMP. Gone had the distinctive the goose neck chassis design in favour of a more conventional chassis design. The chosen recipe for the works department was to select the IMP chassis from the production line, marrying it with a new design lightweight doorless body. Thus the Ulster IMP was born, four cars duly entered into the 1934 Ulster ‘TT’.  All four cars finished this first meeting.

On to the MPH Le-Mans.

1934 also saw the introduction and development of a new larger engine capacity six cylinder racing car know as the MPH Le Mans. By their very name these were to be entered into the 1934 Le Mans 24 hour. Only two of these cars were to be built, the first car KV9477 entrant number 27 driven by French duo Jean Sébilleau and Georges Delaroche and the secondentrant28 registration KV9478 driven by British duo Freddie Dixon and Cyril Paul, respectfully finishing 2nd and 3rd overall. I understand neither of these original cars survives as they were dismantled by the Riley factory. However a collection of parts was purchased upon the closure of the competition department in the late 1930s by Clade Wagstaff.  Among these parts were a quantity of parts which included the two original MPH Le Mans engines, gearboxes and other important components. During the mid 90s these parts changed hands after Wagstaff’s custodianship and KV9477 was recreated using these ex works components for certainly history shows the KV9478 was dismantled in summer 1935 and recycled into one of the “works TT Sprites” namely AVC19 (a car which we’re also handling the sale of currently)

So to confirm only 2 MPH Le Mans Specials were ever made by Riley and after competing at Le Mans in 1934 both of these were dismantled and the components used in other cars. To confuse the situation further, in 1935, the Works took the MPH Le Mans engines and gearboxes, and fitted them into 2 new chassis frames, made to a different design. The 2 new chassis with smaller brakes and a more compact body were raced at Le Mans in 1935 (still entered as Racing MPHs.)
